Super Bowl XLIX

Can’t say I was all that happy that the Patriots won, being a life long Jets fan and having them laugh at us every year can make you despise them. You quickly put emotions behind you and you begin recording history, photographing Tom Brady and Bill Belichick who will go down as arguably the best quarterback and one of the greatest coaches of all time celebrating after the game is what we’re paid to do.

Skeptical Football: Sizing Up The Inevitable Patriots-Packers Super Bowl

Benjamin Morris for Five Thirty Eight:

In the marquee matchup of Week 13, the Packers beat the Patriots in what was billed as a potential Super Bowl preview. The Packers jumped ahead 13-0, but their eventual win wasn’t easy.

Just as baseball is a game of outs and basketball is a game of possessions, football is a game of drives. While teams employ a variety of different strategies and counter-strategies along the way, for the most part there are only two things to keep track of: What happens on drives when a team has the ball and what happens on drives when it doesn’t.

Thorough analysis.

How Bourbon Is Made

Shawn King:

Fascinating video. If you’re looking for a special treat for yourself or a wonderful gift to give this holiday season, you can’t go wrong with a bottle of Woodford Reserve Bourbon.

The Old Fashioned

It is quite an interesting fact actually, as the Old Fashioned cocktail is itself literally the Old Fashioned cocktail. The taste of this drink is intricate in light of its simplicity; sophisticated in light of its directness.

In Conversation: Chris Rock

Chris Rock on Obama:

What do you think of how he’s done? Here we are in the last two years of his presidency, and there’s a sense among his supporters of disappointment, that he’s disengaged.

I’m trying to figure out the right analogy. Everybody wanted Michael Jordan, right? We got Shaq. That’s not a disappointment. You know what I mean? We got Charles Barkley. It’s still a Hall of Fame career. The president should be graded on jobs and peace, and the other stuff is debatable. Do more people have jobs, and is there more peace? I guess there’s a little more peace. Not as much peace as we’d like, but I mean, that’s kind of the gig. I don’t recall anybody leaving on an up.

On race:

And you think this change is generational? That maybe it has nothing to do with Obama?

It’s partly generational, but it’s also my kids grew up not only with a black president but with a black secretary of State, a black joint chief of staff, a black attorney general. My children are going to be the first black children in the history of America to actually have the benefit of the doubt of just being moral, intelligent people.

On Ferguson:

What would you want to cover?

I would cover anything. I mean, I’d be in Ferguson right now, and it would be in-depth, and it would be funny.

What would you do in Ferguson that a standard reporter wouldn’t?

I’d do a special on race, but I’d have no black people.

On Woody Allen:

Okay, but Woody Allen—

I don’t even think Woody does comedy. I think he does dramas with jokes. They’re all sad at their core.

Great, interesting interview.

Are Manning and Brady Cheating? How Rule Changes Have Helped Extend a Rivalry

Bill Simmons:

It’s hard to imagine Manning squandering pole position at this point; his recent Denver resurgence coupled with his touchdown records — season and career, his MVP awards (five), his win-loss record (173-74) and the career passing yard record (it’s coming) make him the most successful QB ever by any calculation.

But with the current rules, why not? Why couldn’t Manning AND Brady knock down that 40-and-over door?

You can’t rule it out. And because of that, you can’t yet say that Manning officially prevailed in the Brady-versus-Manning rivalry. We know we’re in the later rounds … we just don’t know if it’s the 12th, 13th, 14th or 15th. Yeah, Manning leads on every scorecard. For now. Just make sure you don’t count out the little brother with three sisters yet.

Excellent feature from Bill Simmons on the Brady v Manning rivalry.

Tim Cook Speaks Up

I don’t consider myself an activist, but I realize how much I’ve benefited from the sacrifice of others. So if hearing that the CEO of Apple is gay can help someone struggling to come to terms with who he or she is, or bring comfort to anyone who feels alone, or inspire people to insist on their equality, then it’s worth the trade-off with my own privacy.

China collecting Apple iCloud data

Unlike the recent attack on Google, this attack is nationwide and coincides with the launch today in China of the newest iPhone. While the attacks on Google and Yahoo enabled the authorities to snoop on what information Chinese were accessing on those two platforms, the Apple attack is different. If users ignored the security warning and clicked through to the Apple site and entered their username and password, this information has now been compromised by the Chinese authorities. Many Apple customers use iCloud to store their personal information, including iMessages, photos and contacts. This may also somehow be related again to images and videos of the Hong Kong protests being shared on the mainland.
